Chalk The Walk set to transform Cavill Mall into an urban art wonderland

Friday June 4, 2010

Following on from the massive success of last year's event, the chalk the walk festival is back for a second year as part of the Surfers Paradise Festival, transforming Cavill Mall over the 4 days of the Queen's Birthday Weekend.

Starting on June 11th and finishing on the 14th with larger than life works being created over the weekend, whilst the world famous beachfront markets and live music presented by Gold Coast Acoustics & The Gold Coast Music Industry Association along with busking performances all adding to the beachside carnival feel.

Surfers Paradise Alliance CEO Rowena Howe is looking forward to seeing the colourful 3D creations being created within one of the country's most famous spaces- Cavill Mall- and is excited to see what 4 of Australia's most talented chalk artists come up with.

'Surfers Paradise is the perfect home for chalk the walk and it is a great fit for the Surfers Paradise Festival,' said Ms Howe.

'One of the Festival' core aims is the transformation of Surfers into a vibrant cultural precinct throughout its duration and chalk is a perfect example of this.'

'chalk is a giant art class that attracts artists of all ages from all backgrounds; sharing their ideas and techniques, using the streets themselves as a canvas - as they utilise the pavement to sketch out vivid artworks, limited only by the artists imagination.'

'This combined with the carnival like atmosphere we have created with roving music, market stalls and entertainers will make for a fantastic, family friendly weekend.'

Andi Mether from Zest Events, who started what began as a small pavement art festival on Sydney's Pyrmont Bridge in '05 and helped it to grow into the largest Urban Art Festival in the Southern Hemisphere (last year's event attracted thousands of visitors) believes that the Surfers Paradise event will be a great experience for Festival goers.

'Surfers Paradise was made for chalk as all necessary elements combine here, from the events iconic location to the centrality of Cavill Mall,' said Ms Mether.

'All of these combine for an artistic event that will provide visitors and the artists themselves a real treat.'

Produced by Surfers Paradise Alliance, in conjunction with the Gold Coast City Council and the Queensland Government, the inaugural Surfers Paradise Festival will see the beach, streets, parks, venues & eateries of Surfers filled with energetic live performances, engaging art displays, vibrant outdoor festivals and foodie events throughout May and June.
